President Donald Trump described Obamacare as in a “death spiral.”

That is true, and since 2010, the Republicans have voted 60 times to repeal Obamacare.

President Trump campaigned saying he would see that Obamacare would be repealed and replaced.

President Trump’s and the election of a Republican majority in both the House and the Senate gave the Republican’s all the legislative power to carry out what they had promised, time after time, to do.

The Republican congressional majority had been stymied by President Obama’s veto power, executive orders, and their natural inclination to be feckless.  But Obama is gone, Mrs. Clinton defeated, and they have in President Trump a man who was eager to fulfill campaign promises.

The GOP is now in the position of having their supporters fully behind them with total control of the legislative process. The GOP told the voters that the people, not government, should be in control of their own healthcare decisions.

Despite having seven years to prepare, the House Republican political establishment lead by Speaker Paul Ryan introduced a bill entitled The American Health Care Act— tagged as Ryancare.

What Ryancare did not do was repeal and replace Obamacare.

As described by Quin Hillyer in a National Review article, “Of course the Ryancare bill is neither as good as conservatives in our deepest (non-reconciliation-restricted) desire would want, and not even as good as it could be. But it does represent a number of major improvements under current law.”

“Put it this way: If this bill was labeled the ‘Improve Federal Health-Care Policy Act’ rather than considered as the repeal/replacement…”

The utter failure to repeal Obamacare and replace it with a free-market based system is the central issue in the split between the Freedom Caucus and the Ryan lead GOP political establishment.

The Republican political establishment, like they always do, wanted to keep the government in control.  In keeping with their Washington, D.D. institutionalized mentality, any solution to a government created a problem (which was caused by a government solution to a previous government created a problem) is to double-down on more government involvement in the solution.

Nathan Keeble from the Foundation for Economic Education in describing why Ryancare is worse than Obamacare noted that “The GOPs sacrifice of principles for votes will likely result in a loss of both.”

Speaker Paul Ryan and the GOP political establishment have only one principle that they follow: More government is the answer.

The Freedom Caucus, fortunately for all of us, stood up for the principle that if repeal and replacement of Obamacare were promised, then that is what should be delivered.

Respectively, this a lesson hopefully realized by President Trump — if he has not done so already.  (Which I am confident he has.)

President Trump triumphed over his GOP political establishment presidential rivals precisely because he was not the political establishment.  It's also explaines in part why he beat Mrs. Clinton.

It’s hard not to get caught up in the powerful political forces in Washington, D.C. who want to continue business-as-usual. With the usual consequences.

Ryancare is just an all too typical example of that.

As Keeble noted, passing Ryancare would have only resulted in the health insurance market collapsing in an even more rapid death spiral.

That would have doomed President Trump.

The fact is, the Freedom Caucus in standing up against Ryancare has saved the Trump Presidency from disaster.
